Wind TAC

The Wind Thematic Assembly Centre (Wind TAC) is responsible for the collection, processing, qualification and distribution of surface winds data products derived from scatterometers and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite missions. The Wind TAC producers perform the near-real time (NRT) and multi-year (MY) processing of wind observations at global to regional scales, required for Copernicus Marine Service modelling and data assimilation and for various user applications. Surface wind and wind stress force ocean dynamics, trigger mixing of water and evaporate water. The other way around, the water surface may trigger moist convection in the atmosphere and redistribute its momentum, humidity and heat. Winds change very fast, and users need to assess its complete variability in order to arrive at an adequate ocean forcing.

The  Wind TAC is split into two processing groups:

  • The scatterometer processing group consisting of the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI)
  • The SAR processing group, including Collecte Localisation Satellites (CLS), Institut Francais de Recherche pour l’Exploitation de la MER (IFREMER) and OceanScope
